1-substituted, 2-substituted 1H-imidazo [4,5-c]-quinolin-4-amines of formula (1), where X is selected from the group con- sisting of alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, haloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkylamido, amino, substituted amino or hydroxy-alkyl wherein the sub- stituent is alkyl, azido, chloro, hydroxy, 1-morpholino, 1-pyrrolidino, and alkylthio. These compounds function as antiviral agents, they induce biosynthesis of interferon, and they inhibit tumor formation in animal models. This invention also provides intermediates for preparing such compounds, pharmaceutical compositions containing such compounds, and pharmacological methods of using such compounds.
