ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is compounds of the general formula I Image ( I ) wherein R is hydrogen, halogen, C1-4 alkyl, hydroxy, nitro, amino carboxy or a carboxylic acid derivative radical, R1 is hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl, R2 is hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl, R3 is hydrogen R4 is hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl, R5 is hydrogen R6 is hydrogen or optionally R3 and R4 and/or R5 and R6 form a chemical bond, m is 1, 2, 3 or 4, n stands for 0, 1, 2 or 3 and, if n stands for 1, then the dotted lines stand for an optional double bond, pro- vided that (i) if m is 1, n is 1, double bonds are present at the 2,3, 6,7-, 8,9- and 1,9a-positions of the pyridopyrimidine nucleus and (a) R1 and R2 are hydrogen, then R is other than 9-hydroxy-9-methyl, 9-chloro, 9-bromo, 9-carboxy, 9-methoxy- carbonyl, 9-carbamoyl, 8-methyl, 8-ethyl, 8-chloro, 8-bromo or 8-carboxy, or (b) R1 is 8-methyl and R is hydrogen, then R is other than 9-carboxy or 9-methyl, or (c) R1 is 8-ethyl and R2 is hydrogen, then R is other than 9-ethyl; (ii) if m is 2, n is 1, R3 and R4 and R5 and R6 together form double bonds and R is hydrogen, then at least one of R and R1 is other than hydrogen; (iii) if m is 2, n is 2, R is hydrogen and the molecule is a 2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10-octahydro compound, then at least one of R and R1 is other than hydrogen. The invention also ex- tends to pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts and quaternary salts of the compound of formula I. The compounds exhibit analgesic and morphine-potentiating activity and may be used in analgesic compositions.
