A novel type of cathode material for construction of cathodes for high voltage lithium secondary batteries is disclosed. The new cathode material contains as its active ingredient spinel lithium manganese oxide and comprises furthermore an inactive cathode material containing .alpha.-Mn2O3 and/or Li2MnO3. This cathode material exhibits a higher lithium chemical diffusion coefficient than otherwise obtained for pure spinel Li1+xMn2O4. In addition, a process for the preparation of the cathode material is disclosed, said process being economically advantageous and easy to perform on an industrial scale. This process comprises forming a melt from manganese acetate, lithium hydroxide and water, keeping the melt at a temperature in the range of 70 to 110 ~C for a period of from 10 minutes to 4 hours under stirring so as to form an essentially homogeneous material, and drying said material followed by calcination at a temperature in the range of 300 to 800 ~C.

Nouveau type de matériau pour cathodes de batteries secondaires au lithium à haute tension, dont l'ingrédient actif est l'oxyde de lithium et de manganèse de la spinelle au lithium auquel s'ajoute un matériau cathodique inactif contenant du .alpha.-Mn¿2?O¿3? et/ou .alpha.-Li¿2?MnO¿3?. Le nouveau matériau cathodique possède un coefficient de diffusion chimique du lithium plus élevé que celui obtenu avec de la spinelle pure de formule Li¿1+x?Mn¿2?O¿4?. L'invention porte également sur un procédé de préparation dudit matériau, économique et facile à mettre en oeuvre à l'échelle industrielle, consistant à former un mélange d'acétate de manganèse, d'hydroxyde de lithium et d'eau, à le maintenir entre 70 et 110 ~C pendant une durée allant de 10 minutes à 4 heures en le brassant pour le rendre sensiblement homogène, puis à le sécher et enfin à le calciner à une température comprise entre 300 et 800 ~C.
