ABSTRACT Disclosed is a recording system having a central unit and a dictate station for the recording of dictation on a recording medium. The system includes apparatus for providing a first signal responsive to the length of the dictation on the recording medium and for providing a second signal responsive to the termination of the recording of dictation on the recording medium corresponding to the time of the termination. The apparatus also provides for a third signal associated with the central control unit which third signal has a characteristic corresponding to a characteristic of the first signal and a fourth signal having a characteristic corresponding to a characteristic of the second signal. The third signal may be selectively generated in response to a manual input which is independent of the provision of the first and second signals. Storage means are provided for simultaneously storing the first signal, the second signal, the third signal, and the fourth signal and the first signal, the second signal, the third signal, and the fourth signal, stored by the storage means may be appropriately displayed on means such as a video display terminal.
