A B S T R A C T Clocking pulses are derived from a single line of clock marks and information marks contrasting in a physically detectable sense with a background. The marks are located at selected ones of a number of locations serially disposed and equally spaced along a direction of movement of the surface relative to a detector. Clock marks apear at regularly spaced (i.e. every n spaces) while marks appear or not at other locations in accord with binary coded information. There are 'n' detectors serially dis- posed to simultaneously detect the presence or absence of marks at n locations having such spacing. An OR gate is connected to receive, at its input, a signal from each detector if that detector detects a mark. Consequently the output of the OR gate is a signal having frequency corres- ponding to the rate at which the mark locations pass the detectors.
