Herbicidally active derivatives of N-phenyl-3,4,5,6- tetrahydrophthalimide Abstract Novel derivatives of N-phenyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro- phthalimide of the formula I given below have good pre- and post-emergence, selective-herbicidal properties, and they furthermore regulate and inhibit plant growth. The compounds correspond to the formula I Image (I) wherein R is C1-C3-alkyl, n is zero, one or two, R1 and R2 independently of one another are each hydrogen or halogen, R3 is hydrogen, cyano, C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C4-haloalkyl or a radical -CH2YR4, R4 is C1-C4-alkyl, C3-C4-alkenyl, C3-C4-alkynyl, C3-C7- cycloalkyl, benzyl or phenyl, Z is oxygen, or an oxime radical -N-O-Q, and the grouping -C(R3)=Z can also be a ketal radical, and Q is hydrogen, a C1-C10-alkyl radical, a C3-C8-alkenyl radical or a C3-C8-alkynyl radical, a C3-C7-cycloalkyl or C3-C7-cycloalkenyl radical, a phenyl-C1-C4-alkyl group, a carbamoyl radical, a carbonic or thiocarbonic acid radical, a C1-C4-alkylsulfonyl radical, a metal ion or a quaternised ammonium ion.
