On the window portion of the tube an electron-absorbing layer is provided which is scanned by means of an electron beam via the shadow mask. The charge image on the layer is then developed xerographically. The layer is preferably photoconductive so as to be able to remove the charge remaining after the development by means of a uniform exposure. -16-
