A water-insoluble pressure sensitive adhesive useful on tapes having improved strength and faster development of adhesion is made of a co- polymer of (1) an ionic monomer having the formula Image X- or Image where R is hydrogen or methyl, R1 is alkylene 2-12 carbons or 2-hydroxypropy- lene, R2 and R3 are alkyl 1-4 carbons; R4 is alkyl 1-6 carbons, Image where R5 is hydrogen or alkyl 1-6 carbons, -CH2Y where Y is -CONH2, -COOH, or -COOR6 and R6 is alkyl 1-6 carbons; X is C1, Br, or -SO4R7 where R7 is methyl, ethyl or tolyl; Z is -SO3- when n is 2-4 or -COO- when n is 1-4; and (2) alkyl acrylates or methacrylates in which the alkyl groups have 4-14 carbons. Non- quaternized dialkylaminoalkyl acrylates or methacrylate having the formula Image are optional additional monomers included in the copolymer.
