WIRE LINE CLAMP FOR USE IN A DRILLING APPARATUS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved wire line clamp is attached to the circulating head atop a string of drill pipe and permits remote clamping from the drill rig floor. The wire line, or conductor cable, is clamped in the grove of a sheave used to lower the cable into the drill string by means of an arcuate clamping shoe that matingly engages with the cable in the sheave groove. The clamping shoe is pressed into engagement by means of a clamping pin attached to a vertically movable cross member that extends across the top of the sheave and that is attached to a U-shaped support means positioned above and attached to the sheave axle. The cross piece has on each end two collars in which are located hydraulic rams, or the like, for providing a downward force upon the collars and thus the cross piece and clamping shoe upon actuation.
