ABSRRACT Novel steroids, which can be used as antiinflammatory agents, have the formula Image or the 1,2-dehydro derivative thereof, wherein X is -S-, -?- or -?-; R1 is alkyl, aryl or acyloxyalkyl; R2 and R3 are the same or different and are hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, carboalkoxy, formyl, alkyl-?-, alkyl-?-O-, hydroxy, halogen, phenyl or cyano, wtih the proviso that when R2 and R3 are different, one of R2 and R3 is hydrogen; R4 is carbonyl, .beta.-hydroxymethylene or .beta.-acyloxy- methylene; R5 is hydrogen or halogen; and R6 is hydrogen or fluorine; wherein the term "aryl" refers to phenyl or phenyl substituted with one or two alkyl, alkoxy or halogen sub- stituents; the term "acyloxy" refers to a grow having the formula Y-?-O- wherein Y is alkyl or aryl; and the terms "alkyl" and "alkoxy" refer to groups having 1 to 10 carbons atoms.
