ABSTRACT In the prior art it has been attempted to hydrogenate butynediol to butenediol. However such processes were not as efficient as possible in that there were low yields of product, substantial amounts of volatile side products, and did not provide a high yield of the preferred cis isomer The present invention seeks to overcome these drawbacks by providing a process for the production of butenediol in high yield by partial catalytic hydrogenation of butynediol which comprises: reacting an aqueous solution of butynediol, at a concentration of about 10-50% by weight of said solution with hydrogen, in the presence of a catalyst, in the amount of about 0.1- 10% by weight of said butynediol, said cataiyst consisting essentially of palladium, in the amount of-about 0.5-15% by weight of said catalyst, and lead in an atomic ratio of lead to palladium of at least 0.03, on a transistional alumina powder support, at a temperature of about 30-70°C. and a pressure ranging from atmospheric to about 300 psig.
