ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE N-carbamoyloxypyridinium salts of the general formula Image X? are obtained when N-N-disubstituted carbamide chlorides are reacted with pyridine-N-oxides at temperatures between 0° and 40°C in aprotic solvents. These compounds exhibit carboxyl activating properties making them useful in converting carboxylic acids into anhydrides in aqueous solution or into amides by means of reaction with suitable amines.
