ABSTRACT Process for the preparation of 1R-cis-caronaldehydic acid of formula:- Image (I) by cyclodehydrating (1R,cis)-3,3-dimethyl-2-(2-oxopropyl) cyclo-propane-1-carboxylic acid to produce a bicyclic enol lactone, treating the enol lactone with ozone, effecting reductive cleavage of the ozonide so formed to afford the acetic acid mixed anhydride of the open form of (1R, cis)- caronaldehydic acid, and hydrolysing the anhydride to yield compound I. Compound I is useful as an intermediate in the manufacture of pyrethroid insecticides.
