ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Carries of thalassaemia, especially beta thalassaemia minor, can be screened by use of a discriminant obtained from a person's blood cell parameters. The discriminant preferably is defined as (MCV)2 x MCN, i.e., the mathematic product of the square of the mean corpuscular volume of the red blood cells multiplied by the mean corpuscular haemoglobin. This discriminant hereinafter is identified as a thalassaemia index. The thalassaemia index can be employed alone or as part of a plural step screening method. Apparatus for obtaining the thalassaemia index in an automatic and electronic manner is disclosed.
