Abstract Novel 2-nitro-5-phenoxyphenyloxazoles, -oxazines and -thiazoles are disclosed. These compounds have the formula (I) Image wherein A is a C2-C3alkylene or C2-C3alkenylene radical which can be substituted by C1-C4alkyl or C1-C4haloalkyl, each of R1, R2 and R3 independently is hydrogen, halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro or cyano, and X is oxygen, sulfur or an imino group. The novel compounds have herbicidal and plant growth-inhibiting properties. They are especially suitable for use as selective herbicides in crops of cereals.
