ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention is concerned with a novel process for the preparation of certain known substituted phenylactic acid esters of the general formula: Image .....I wherein each of R1 and R2 represents lower alkyl and may be the same or different, which comprises hydrolyzing novel suitably substituted phenylacetimidate salts, which are themselves obtained from a further class of novel compounds. Compounds of general formula I have useful pharmacolo- gical properties and have been shown to be valuable agents for inducing narcosis. Illustrative, and probably the most widely recognized, of these compounds at present is 3-methoxy-4- N,N-diethylcarbamoylmethoxy-phenylacetic acid n-ppropyl ester, commonly termed "propanidid".
