ABSTRACT Propylene oxide and other olefinic oxides are synthesised by reacting olefin and oxygen in the presence of a catalytic amount of a complex of the type L2MX2, L2M or L2R where L is a ligand which is resistant to oxidation under the conditions of the process and contains a Group 5b element (preferably phosphorous), M is a Group 8 metal (preferably palladium), X is an acidic anion (preferably chlorine) and R is an olefin (preferably ethylene). Increased yields of olefinic oxide may be obtained by the introduction of hydrogen, preferably together with a catalytic amount of a transition metal salt or transition metal complex. -1 -
