_ I _ ABSTRACT The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of 2-methyl-3-(o-tolyl)-7- chloro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-oxo-6-quinazolinesulfonamide by reacting the corresponding benzamide precursor with acetaldehyde or an acetal at an elevated temperature in the presence of ethanol or isopropanol and an acid having a negative pKa.
