ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to polyphosphazenes which have an at least partially regulated structure corresponding to the formula: ?N3P3(Cl)5(OR1)?n (I) where n is greater than 2, and where R1 is phenyl or substituted phenyl. This invention further relates to copolymers, derived from the above polymers (I), which correspond to the formula: ?N3P3(OR1)(OR2)5?n (II) where R1 is phenyl or substituted phenyl and where R2 is different than R1 and is an alkyl or substituted alkyl radical or a phenyl or substituted phenyl radical. These polymers are prepared by polymerizing cyclic triphosphazenes of the formula: Image (III) to form the polymers (I) which, in turn, are reacted to re- place the chlorine with organic radicals to form polymers (II). The polymers (II) can be formed by chemical blowing agents to form fire retardant articles. These polymers have fire retardant properties and evolve little or no smoke when exposed to an open flame.
