ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The present invention relates to a process for the polymerization of alpha-olefins by means of a catalytic system constituted by a) a compound selected from alkyl-halides, alkyl-derivatives or hydrides of metals belonging to the first three groups of the Periodic System and b) the combination product of a chloride of a transition metal selected among V, Mn, Co and Fe, with titanium trichloride. The combination product is supported on a carrier consisting of a high surface area material selected from the oxides of the elements belonging to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th groups of the Periodic System, which material has been chlorinated before being used as support for the combination product. The weight ratio between components a) and b) is in the range of from 4 to 17. The invention also relates to the catalytic system as such and to a method for the preparation thereof.
