ABSTRACT A process is disclosed for preparing 3-thienyl malonic acid, comprising treatment of a 3-thienyl cyanoacetate of formula (III): Image (III) where R1 represents an aryl or alkyl group, with at least a molar excess of an alkali metal hydroxide, this being a one-step process as compared to the prior art and providing the pro- duct in good yield. 3-thienyl malonic acid is useful as an intermediate in the production of certain penicillins.
