ABSTRACT Reactivatable, stable electrodes for use in high temperature applications such as fusion electrolysis, and which consist of a plurality of preferentially oriented electrode elements in the shape of pipes, rods or plates; each element of which comprises a plurality of electrically conducting fibres coated or mixed with an electrochemically active material. Preferred fibres include those of carbon, boron, silicon carbide, tantalum and niobium carbides and mixtures thereof, and preferred electrochemically active materials include metals, metal carbides, borides and nitrides, barium titanates and cermets.
