ABSTRACT FLOW TRANSDUCER AND APPARATUS UTILIZING THE SAME A turbine-type flow transducer for measuring flow rate has a tube through which liquid to be measured passes. Within the tube there is a vaned rotor member that rotates at a speed which is a function of the flow rate of the liquid passing through the tube. Disposed on opposite sides of the tube are a light source and a photosensitive device that are so positioned with respect to the rotor that the vanes of the rotor cyclically vary the intensity of the light beam passing from the light source to the photosensitive device. The material of which the tube is constructed is chosen to have a refractive index that is similar to that of the liquid whose flow is being measured, so that the beam of light will pass across the bore of the tube substantially unrefracted when liquid is present in the bore and be detected by the photosensitive device.
