ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for reducing the amount of basic impurities, especially N-heterocyclic compounds, in adiponitrile is dis- closed. The process comprises treating adiponitrile with a Type X or Type Y molecular sieve. Type Y molecular sieves are preferred. The molecular sieve may be in the polyvalent cation, ammonia or hydrogen form. The adiponitrile may be treated in the presence or absence of water. The process is particularly useful in the purification of adiponitrile manufactured from adipic acid and ammonia.
