ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the manufacture of a compound having the following general formula: Image (I) (wherein each of R1 and R2 is independently an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or R1 and R2 together represent an alkylene group of up to 5 carbon atoms; each of X1 and X2 is independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a halogen atom, or X1 and X2 together represent an alkylene group of up to 5 carbon atoms; or X1 is a hydrogen atom and X2 is mono- halovinyl group, a dihalovinyl group or a dimethylvinyl group; and R is a methyl or ethyl group) which comprises reacting a cyclopropane nitrile having the general formula: Image (II) with methanol or ethanol under substantially anhydrous conditions at a temperature in the range 80° to 200°C and in the presence of sulphuric acid acting as reaction catalyst and as scavenger for ammonia produced during the reaction.
