ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A steering gear of the push rod kind suitable for motor vehicles is restrained from exhibiting rotation relative to the housing member during its longitudinal displacement by a track follower. The follower, which is on one of the members, slidably engages and follows a longitudinally extending track on the other member. At least a control part length of the track extends in a direction other than parallel to the direction in which the push rod is longitudinally displaced. During longitudinal displacement of the push rod and while the follower is moving along the control part, the push rod exhibits controlled rotation relative to the housing and thereby affects a change in the steering ratio between the longitudinal displacement of the push rod and rotation of the nut.
