ABSTRACT Process for preparing hexamethylenediamine by the hydrogenation of adiponitrile in the presence of ammonia wherein a compound selected from the group consisting of RCOM, glyoxal or carbon monoxide is added to the reaction mixture wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and M is the radical OH, NH2, ONH4, ONa or OR' where R' is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms.
