ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The useful shelf life of living erythrocytes suitable for trans- fusion is extended by maintaining adequate ATP and 2,3 DPG levels using a water insoluble polymer containing releaseable phosphate ions as a source of inorganic phosphate ions during the storage period for supplying physiologically acceptable, continuous sustained release of metabolizable phosphate to such erythrocyte. This maintains the ATP and the 2,3 levels at least equal to those of freshly drawn blood for a storage period equivalent to 28 days of storage at 4°C.
