ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved pressure seal assembly for rotary machinery. The assembly utilizes a buffer oil flowing through a seal ring surrounding the rotating shaft of the machinery. The seal ring includes a plurality of openings about its periphery to pass the oil through the ring to a number of bearing pads. The oil serves to cool, lubricate, seal and damp the seal ring. The assembly reduces oil loss to the pressurized environment to a minimum. The assembly includes a one-piece stationary ring surrounding the shaft, the ring having a portion towards the high-pressure side with windback grooves on the surface adjacent the shaft to direct the buffer oil in the desired direction. The ring also has a portion with bearing pads at the low-pressure end of the shaft seal. An annular space is disposed in the ring between the windback grooves and the bearing pads. Channels in the ring adjacent the windback grooves communicate between the external supply of buffer oil and the annular space. The oil first flows through the channels to cool the windback grooves and then passes into the annular space to flow towards the wind- back grooves and the bearing pads, the windback grooves resisting the flow of the buffer oil.
