PATENT APPLICATION of CLINTON E. BROWN for ARTIFICIAL KIDNEY ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Extra-corporeal devices are provided for performing the functions of a natural kidney. In one device, a bodily fluid such as peritoneal fluid or arterial blood is withdrawn from the body and passed through a dialyzer that causes selective diffusion of toxic, low molecular weight solutes into a water-containing dialysate. The dialysate and solutes are then passed through a filtration means or combination of filtration and electrodializing means that permit only the passage of pure water or pure water and dissolved electrolytes while retaining the low molecular weight toxic solutes. The purified filtrate from the filtration means is recycled and combined with a controlled amount of make- up electrolyte solution as the dialysate for the dialyzer and the unfiltered residue from the filtration means is discharged as waste. The peritoneal fluid or blood in transit through the dialyzer is thus cleansed of toxic substances and is suitable for return.
