PRODUCTION OF QUATERNARY PHOSPHONIUM HYDROXIDES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Quaternary phosphonium hydroxides of the general formula: Image (I) in which R stands either for hydrogen or an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon having 1 to 12 carbon atoms and n stands for 1 or 2, are made by reacting a di- or trimethyl- phosphine in an aqueous medium with an epoxide of the general formula Image (II) in which R has the meaning given above, More specifically a pH-value of ?12 is established in the aqueous medium by means of a base and the starting materials are mixed in said medium.
