ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus are provided for forming hay bales or the like. The method involves forming a package of forage crops in the field where such crops are grown by severing the crops from their roots then applying, e.g., by spraying, a digestible sealing substance to such severed crops; and finally forming a package of such severed crops. The apparatus includes a frame adapted to move along the ground; crop gather- ing structure attached to the frame for picking up forage crops from the ground; receiving structure attached to the frame for receiving the gathered forage crops and forming a package of the forage crops; and an attachment attached to the apparatus for applying, e.g., by spraying, a digestible sealing substance on to the exterior of the package while the package is being formed, the digestible substance including means for substantially sealing water out from the package. Preferably, the attach- ment is spraying apparatus attached to a hay baling machine for spraying such a digestible sealing substance on a bale of hay as it is being formed. The bales are thus treated as they are formed with a digestible sealing substance for sealing, adding nutrients and/or preventing spoilage of such hay or other forage crop.
