ABSTRACT A stud welding device comprising a collet adapted to hold a stud at the tip of the forward end portion thereof. The device also comprises a cylindrical welding guide disposed around the forward end portion of the collet and mounted for rotation about the collet. During operation of the device the welding guide has a cut-off adjacent its forward end to form a step in the guide. An L-shaped cover plate is disposed in the cut-off having one leg providing a surface adjacent to and substantially parallel with the collet to form a positioning surface and a second leg providing a surface normal to the positioning surface for covering the opening formed by the step.
