D-23,215 RF TRAP FOR A CABLE TELEVISION TRUNK AMPLIFIER STATION by Sai W. Kwok Abstract of Disclosure An amplifier station in a trunk cable comprises a ground plane enclosure housing a length of first transmission line and a length of second transmission line having a passband amplifier in it. First and second relays at opposite ends of the lines have one ends of first, second and third elongated and parallel form C contacts thereof electrically connected to an end of the first and second lines and cable, respectively. During normal operation of the amplifier, energization current in relay coils causes second and third contacts to touch for passing signals on the trunk cable and second line with amplification. PIN diodes are connected so as to short circuit opposite ends of the first line only when the amplifier functions properly for improving the isolation in the station equipment. When the amplifier malfunctions, current in the coils is interrupted and first and third contacts close. In order to improve the station response at frequencies f2 that are above the passband of TV signals on the cable (and that are a function of the length of the first line, coupling capacitance across open first and third contacts, and characteristics of the diodes) a length of conductive foil is wrapped as a sleeve or tube around a cylindrical glass enclosure containing the contacts of each relay. Opposite ends of each foil sleeve are connected through wires to one sides of associated variable capacitors that have their other sides connected to a ground plane. The ground plane, contacts and sleeve of each relay comprise coupled transmission lines that cooperate with the reactances of associated wires and capacitors to resonate for coupling signal frequencies f2 away from the lines and cable for improving the overall performance of a system including series connected trunk stations.
