ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A process for the preparation of alkyl tert-butyl ethers starting from a primary alcohol and isobutylene in the presence of butadiene. The process comprises supplying a feed mixture consisting of a primary alcohol and a O4 hydrocarbon fraction containing isobutylene and butadiene to a reaction zone containing an ion exchange resin in acid form as catalyst, at a space velocity of from 5 to 35, reacting therein the feed mixture at a temperature of from 60 to 120°C and separation the ether obtained by distillation. The losses of butadiene which are due to the dimerisation and polymerization thereof in the presence of the catalyst are limited to values lower than 2% and an olefinio fraction which is further enriched in butadiene can thus be recovered as side-product.
