Abstract Mixtures consisting of acetic acid, acetaldehyde, ethanol and olefins having two to four carbon atoms are produced from carbon monoxide and hydrogen by catalytic reaction in the gas phase at 1-300 bars and 150°C to 350°C. The oxygen-containing compounds and the olefins are formed in a molar ratio of 1:1 to 2.5:1. The catalysts contain rhodium, alkali metals and, if appropriate, promoters, on supports. The supports which have been doped with alkali metal and, if appropriate, with promoters are preferably sintered at temperatures between 400°C and 1,200°C before being impregnated with rhodium.
