INVENTORS Douglas STEVENS Helge Ole FORBERG Larry Dean JENNINGS Frank Moe STEPHENS, Jr. Francis John BOWEN TITLE METHOD OF TREATING ALUNITE ORE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a method for recovering aluminum hydroxide from ore containing alunite by roasting the ore to remove the water of hydration, leaching the roasted ore with a weak base to remove potassium and sulfate extracting the aluminum content with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, and pre- cipitating aluminum hydroxide crystals from the solution. When a mixture of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide is used to digest the leached ore, the sulfates recovered are useful as fertilizers. The mixture preferably contains at least 20% by weight sodium hydroxide and has a concentration of up to about 300 g/l caustic expressed as Na2CO3.
