A METHOD AND AN APPARATUS FOR AUTOMATICALLY WINDING A THREAD ONTO A WINDING UNIT A B S T R A C T For the automatic winding of a thread on to a sleeve (2), thread (4) is placed round the running sleeve (2) which is to be freshly wound several times by a gripper device (9) while it is being wound further on to the almost complete spool (1) or while it is still being sucked off. Once it has looped the sleeve several times, the transversing movement (3) on this sleeve (2) is changed. The first layer is thus covered and the spool (2) itself produces thread tension. At this moment, the thread formerly taken off by the sleeve has to be cut. Le A 19 474
