-12- ABSTRACT A plug and socket valve assembly comprises a valve body ( 10, 76) having an inlet (38,106) and an outlet (26,92) which are isolated from one another by a resilient closure element (30,98) when the valve is closed and a connector plug (52, 120) having a fluid passageway therethrough (56,124) and which is adapted for insertion into the outlet of the valve body so as to displace the resilient element and thereby automatically open communication between said inlet and the fluid passageway whereby fluid can flow through the valve body and the connector plug.
