ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The vacuum breaker of the present invention comprises an outer housing having an elongated bore extending there- through the bore having an inlet portion an outlet portion and an intermediate portion. The housing includes at least one radially extending back flow discharge opening providing communication to the intermediate portion of the bore. A cylindrical insert is fitted into the inlet portion of the bore and includes a second end extending within the inter- mediate portion of the bore. The second end of the insert has an outer surface which is spaced radially inwardly from the intermediate portion of the bore to define a pressure chamber therebetween. The insert member includes a cavity in its center and a plurality of pressure outlet openings providing fluid communication from the cavity to the pressure relief chamber. A resilient seal surrounds the insert member and the pressure outlet openings therein and is movable from a normal position wherein it sealingly engages the pressure outlet opening of the insert member and is spaced from the discharge opening of the intermediate portion of the bore to a pressure flow position wherein the seal is in engagement over the discharge opening of the intermediate portion of the bore and is spaced from the pressure outlet opening of the insert member. The outlet portion of the bore is in fluid communication with the pressure relief chamber and the back flow discharge opening of the housing when the seal is in its - 1 - normal position. When the seal is in its pressure flow position, it seals off the back flow pressure opening of the bore so as to prevent fluid from exiting through the back flow pressure opening. - 2 -
