Semipermeable Membrane Consisting of Crosslinked Copolymer Containinq Maleimide Groups Abstract Semipermeable membranes are obtained from crosslinkable polymers by irradiating with electromagnetic waves a layer of photocrosslinkable copolymers, which is applied to a suitable support, said copolymers being based on ethyleni- cally unsaturated monomers and having a molecular weight of 103 to 107 and containing at least 2 maleimide groups of the formula I Image (I) wherein each of R1 and R2 is methyl or R1 and R2, together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, form a 5- or 6-membered carbocyclic ring which may be substituted by methyl, in each polymer chain, with at least 10% by weight of the monomers used for preparing the photocrosslinkable copolymers containing acid and/or basic groups. The new membranes having improved resistance to solvents while still keeping good flux and good retentivity are used for the separation of organic substances, in particular in hyperfiltration or ultra filtration.
