ABSTRACT In a machine used for the automatic transfer of panty hose from a machine that makes panty hose with seams to a machine that sews pieces of reinforcing fabric it is necessary to have a quick and efficient means for elastically catching the garment. The means provided is a device having prongs that penetrate into a central opening of the garment that is left unsewn. Moreover, the insertion must occur immediately after the garment comes out of the machine that makes the panty hose. In order to achieve this, the opening must be transversely spread apart during the horizontal movement of the garment towards the catching device and while the legs of the garment are being suctioned separately into corresponding tubes. At the end of the garment transfer the border of the opening will in this way automatically find itself surrounding the prongs on the catching device. In order to achieve the aforementioned spreading apart of the garment opening a device is provided that comprises arms which oscillate in the vertical direction, thus allowing the transverse spreading apart of the border of the opening in a horizontal direction, and shafts which rotate in a horizontal plane, thus allowing the insertion and exit of the arms into or from the opening. In addition the arms move horizontally in order to allow the transfer of the garment from the exit station of the machine that makes the panty hose to the catching device.
