ABSTRACT The present invention relates to novel herbicidal compounds (2-imidazolin-2-yl)pyridine and quinolinecarboxylic acid and ester inner salts and ylides, having the structure Image Image II III wherein X is H, halogen or methyl; Y and Z are each, for example, hydrogen, halogen, C1-C6 alkyl, hydroxy-loweralkyl, difluoro- methoxy, trifluoromethoxy, C3-C8 straight or branched alkenyloxy optionally substituted with one or three halogens; and when taken together, Y and Z may form a ring which may optionally be sub- stituted, in which YZ are represented by -(CH2)n-, where n is an integer of 3 or 4, or -(CH)4-; R1 is C1-C4 alkyl; R2 is C1-C4 alkyl or C3-C6 cycloalkyl; and when R1 and R2 are taken together with the carbon to which they are attached they may represent C3-C6 cycloalkyl optionally substituted with methyl; R3 is H or COOR3 represents an ester of the acid; R4 and R5 are each C1-C4 alkyl or phenyl, or when taken together, may form a C5 or C6 cyclo- alkyl; the tautomers thereof and when R1 and R2 are not the same the optical isomers thereof. The methods for their preparation and a method for controlling undesirable vegetation utilizing said compounds are also disclosed.
