Abstract of the Disclosure In the oxidation of reactive aromatic substances with molecular oxygen in carboxylic acid solution in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a cobalt compound and, when required, adding a manganese compound and a bromine compound suitable as a co-catalyst there easily occurs an inactivation of the catalyst system. This is prevented in that after each reaction cycle the catalyst is reactivated by treatment with a strong oxidizing agent and that the water formed during the reaction is removed by distillation.
