ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel 1-substituted-5-hydroxymethyl-2-mercapto-imidazoles of the formula Image (I) wherein R is Image , in which R1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom and n is 1-3, a pyridylmethyl group or an alkyl group with 1-4 C-atoms and processes for preparing them are provided herein. Such new compounds are prepared from dihydroxyacetone dimer, the amine R NH2 and potassium thiocyanate. The compounds of formula (I) are useful as starting materials in the preparation of therapeutically valuable 1,5- imidazoles or 4(5)-mono substituted imidazoles.
