ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for determining a characteristic of an ana- lyte in a sample by measuring the light transmitted from an assay site on a support in relation to the amount of signal modulating component present at said assay site. The amount of signal modulating component is related to the presence of the analyte in a sample. The method comprises irradiating the site with light. Directing light from the site onto a group of memory cells of a dynamic random access memory. Exposing the group of memory cells to the directed light for a predetermined period. Measuring the digital states of the memory cells after the exposing step and analyzing the measured states of the group of memory cells to determine the characteristics of the analyte. -28-
