Abstract of the Disclosure The invention provides a process for preparing alkyl esters of saturated aliphatic carboxylic acids by reacting an olefin with carbon monoxide and an alkanol in the presence of a cobalt compound as catalyst and pyridine and/or a non-ortho-substituted alkyl-pyridine, at elevated temperature and pressure. Unreacted charge materials are returned to the reaction mixture. To reduce or eliminate build up of high-boiling impur- ities formed by side reactions, charge materials to be returned to the reaction are treated to separate as much as possible of any water pre- sent in the charge material.
