Title HERBICIDAL SULFONAMIDES Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to novel herbicidally active sulfonylurea compounds substituted in the positions ortho to the sulfonylurea bridge, agricul- turally suitable compositions thereof and methods of their use as preemergent or postemergent herbicides or plant growth regulants. The compounds of the invention are defined by the following formula: Image wherein R1 is S(O)nR5, CF3, NR6R7, CO2R8, Image OSO2R13, CH2OR14 or Q; R2 is S(O)mR5, CF3, NR6R7, CO2R8, Image OSO2R13, CH2OR14 or Q; R3 is H, Cl, F, Br, CH3, OCH3 or CF3; R4 is H or CH3; R5 is C1-C3 alkyl; R6 and R7 are independently CH3 or CH2CH3; R8 is C1-C3 alkyl, CH2CH?CH2, CH2CH2Cl or CH2CH2OCH3; R9 is CH3 or OCH3; R10 is C1-C3 alkyl; R11 is H, Cl, Br, F, CH3 or OCH3; R12 is H or CH3; R13 is C1-C3 alkyl or CF3; R14 is C1-C3 alkyl or CF2H; n is 0, 1 or 2; m is 0 or 1: Q is Image , Image , Image , Q-1 Q-2 Q-3 Image Image Image Q-4 Q-5 Q-6 Image , Image , Image , Q-7 Q-8 Q-9 Image , Image , Image ; Q-10 Q-11 Q-12 N is O, S or NR18; W' is O OR S; R15, R16, R17 and R18 are independently H or CH3; r Image , Image or Image ; A-4 A-5 A-6 Z is CH or N; L is O or CH2; X is CH3, OCH3, Cl, OCH2CH3, OCF2H or F; Y is H, NH2, NHCH3, N(CH3)2, CH3, CH2CH3, CF3, CH2OCH3, CH2OCH2CH3, O(C1-C3 alkyl), SCH3, O(C3-C4 alkenyl), O(C3-C4 alkynyl), OCH2CF3, OCH2CH2F, OCH2CH2Cl, OCH2CH2Br or OCF2H; X1 is CH3, OCH3, Cl or OCF2H; Y1 is CH3 or OCH3; X2 is CH3, CH2CH3 or CH2CF3; Y2 is CH3, OCH3 or SCH3; and Y3 is H or CH3; and agriculturally suitable salts thereof; provided that a) when either one of R1 or R2 is CF3, then the other is also CF3; b) R1 and R2 are not simultaneously CO2R8; c) when either one of R1 or R2 is SO2NR9R10, then the other must not be S(O)nR5, S(O)mR5, CH2OR14 or NR6R7; d) when R9 is OCH3, then R10 is CH3; e) when either one of R1 or R2 is CO2R8, then the other must not be S(O)nR5, S(O)mR5 or NR6R7; f) the total number of carbon atoms in R26 to R31 combined, is equal to or less than four; g) when X is Cl or F, then Z is CH and Y is NH2, NHCH3, N(CH3)2, OCH3 or OCH2CH3; h) when R1 is CO2R8 and R2 is OSO2R13, then A is not A-1; and i) when X or Y is OCF2H and A is A-1, then R2 is Q. Q is also Image , Image , Image , Q-13 Q-14 Q-l5 Image , Image , Image ; Q-16 Q-17 Q-18 R19, R20, R22, R24, and R25 are independently H or CH3; R21 and R23 are independently H, CH3 or OCH3; Q is also Image or Image ; Q-19 Q-20 R26, R27, R28 R29, R30 and R31 are independently H or CH3; A is Image , Image , Image , A-1 A-2 A-3
