A process is provided herein for preparing a substantially purified aqueous indole solution. In such process, crude indole containing an organic impurity is dissolved in an organic solvent which is immiscible with water. The indole solution is contacted with water or with an aqueous reaction medium, in order to conduct the reaction to form a two-phase liquid system and to distribute indole to the aqueous phase. In such two-phase liquid system, the distribution ratio of the impurity to the organic phase is greater than that of indole.
