ABSTRACT The invention relates to an apparatus and method for detecting leaks in articles that, in general, are insulators against an electric current. In the pre- ferred embodiment the apparatus and method are used to detect holes or perforations in surgical gloves. The apparatus comprises a power source, first and second electrical leads, and a means for measuring the elec- trical properties between the two leads. In the method of the invention the apparatus, together with an ion containing fluid, complete an electrical circuit be- tween the inside and the outside of the article when a hole in the article permits ions to carry electrons through the hole. When used to test for holes in surg- ical gloves, the test can be conveniently carried out while the practitioner washes or rinses his gloved hands under running tap water.
